Meet Suzie Carter!

Chief of Medical Media for the Oklahoma City VA Medical Center

Suzie Carter is a very creative person.

She leads a team that works on all the photography, videos, TV broadcasts, posters, story boards, drawings and paintings, and computer presentations for the entire hospital.  Suzie might spend one day sculpting a model of the human heart out of clay for a doctor's presentation, and the next day she might design a promotional video for the hospital or the invitations for the Veterans' Arts festival.

Since Suzie is the team leader, she also spends a lot of time solving problems so her team can do their work.

Suzie's work impacts the community because many of the visual materials she creates are designed for teaching, promoting the hospital, or as a community outreach project.  Her work is created to be seen, and it impacts everyone who see it, and hopefully it opens their eyes to what's going on at the VA Medical Center.

Suzie says, "The hardest part of my job is coming up new ideas all the time- you are constantly creating something new.  You have to energize yourself to be creative.  And keeping up with technology can be a challenge."

Suzie says the best part of her job is its uniqueness- she works on all kinds of projects using different media, and Suzie really likes that it's not the same thing everyday.  She also enjoys the challenge of each new project, and she's glad she can use her creativity and expertise in her work.

Career Check

Suzie would recommend this career, but she cautions that this field is very competitive and hard to get into.  She also says creating media for the government does not pay as highly as working in a private industry.  But, she says it is incredibly rewarding.

Suzie would advise anyone interested in this field to get an education- it takes broad based knowledge to be creative- and learn the skills of video production and working with different visual media, like painting, drawing, photography, and computer skills.

See what's going on at the VA Medical Center!
