National cemeteries were created by President Abraham Lincoln to honor soldiers who had died in battle,  veterans who survived the battles, and their wives, husbands, and children. 

More than two million Americans, including veterans of every war and conflict from the Revolutionary War to Operation Iraqi Freedom, are honored by burial in our national cemeteries.

Fort Gibson National Cemetery is located in Muskogee County, 1 1/2 miles northeast of Fort Gibson, Oklahoma.  The cemetery has significant historical value as a Civil War cemetery and also a rich Indian tradition.  It covers 48 acres and includes 17,000 interments.  The office, which is open Monday through Friday, excluding Federal holidays, offers a historical self-guided tour.  Weekend visitors may use the graveside locator in front of the Administration Building to find directions to a grave.
