National cemeteries were created by President Abraham Lincoln to honor soldiers who had died in battle, veterans who survived the battles, and their wives, husbands, and children. More than two million Americans, including veterans of every war and conflict from the Revolutionary War to Operation Iraqi Freedom, are honored by burial in our national cemeteries.
